Aastha(a CTI project for Truckers/Helpers/FSWs in Jorhat)
Voluntary Health Association of Assam,Guwahati.
Period of reporting: June-November'2005

VHAA is implementing a Composite Targetted Intervention(CTI) project for Truck drivers/ helpers/FSWs in Jorhat district under the NACP II.

This project intervenes at different levels and through different groups like - truckers, Female Sex Workers(FSWs) and the community at large - to provide service through counselling, treatments and condom promotion and creating a better understanding of AIDS which spread through unprotected and multiple sex partners.

VHAA, through its project 'Aastha' has been able to contact 2376 truckers/ helpers, and has created a contact base with them.

The challenge lies in meeting the FSWs and initiating discussions with them. There is already a lot of apprehension which dissuades them from coming forward for any dialogue. But the Outreach Workers have been able to make inroads and have developed a rapport with the FSWs.

Regular health education/counselling sessions are held at our intervention sites. Makeshift clinics has been arranged for at all drop in sites so that privacy can be maintained.

With the emphasis on community mobilization for better success of the project, group discussions have been held with different sections of the community. The team is also exploring the possibilities of working in co-ordination with SHG groups to help create a better understanding of AIDS and the relevant issues.
