» Rural Volunteers Centre (RVC):

Rural Volunteers Centre (RVC) established in 1993 is in Akajan village in Dhemaji District of Assam. Dhemaji district is one of the worst flood hit area of India. Agricultural land is laden with sand deposited by flood waters rendering the land unfit for cultivation; this and chronic occurrence of flood have left people with nutrition deficiency and food insecurity. The public health infrastructure along with roads are damaged/washed away by floods year after year; therefore RVC has carried out various work related to people's health care by training community health workers, organising health camps in over 300 villages, creating knowledge and awareness on mother and child health etc.

RVC in collaboration with many national and international organizations have worked with doctors in relief camps and followed it up in rehabilitated habitats created jointly by the Government and RVC.

RVC has a team of 30 Barefoot Doctors who are semi skilled person from the community who provides immediate services with locost allopathic medicine. They were training on symptoms of common diseases and immediate treatment; preventive measures of the diseases and provided with a kit with 20 types of medicines; they have addressed cases in 60 villages so far and 70 more such Barefoot Doctors will be trained in 2006.
The supporting team of ANMs and the Doctor along with Government health personnel have provided support and guidance to this entire effort. RVC volunteers have mobilized 110 persons with disability into Self Help Group (SHG) they are trained and provided alternative livelihood package in a cluster of 26 villages.

Kangali Bharal (Grain bank/Seed bank) is established by Rural Volunteers Centre in 10 villages is a common village granary to safeguard fall in nutritional standards of most vulnerable section of the flood affected people during the period of acute food crisis. Duryug Pratirodh Samiti is a community managed resource centre, for mitigation of disaster. These committees are trained on early warning system also they manage the Kangali Bharal.
